A Western Chic Wedding Weekend

A Western Chic Wedding Weekend

Wedding Journals | With Mr & Mrs Schmidt

Set in the heart of Vail, Colorado, Maddy's wedding weekend was a seamless blend of mountain romance and western-chic style. For her rehearsal dinner, she chose our Visions Lace Floor Length Dress in Buttercream – a piece that perfectly captured the spirit of the setting. From thoughtful styling to moments filled with meaning, Maddy shares the story behind a weekend that felt effortlessly and authentically her.

The Story So Far

We'd love to start with your story. How did you and your partner meet?
We’ve always joked that there was an invisible string connecting us. We grew up in neighboring towns, our moms knew the same people, we went to the same college, and we both ended up in Chicago, yet we never crossed paths until we were actually living there. I made the first move, and once we started talking, we realized we shared all these wild coincidences, including both being twins. We’ve been inseparable ever since, and now we live together in Denver, CO.

Can you share a little about your proposal story?
When we were dating, our very first trip together was to Portland, where we wandered around the charming coastal town, ate way too much lobster, and listened to live music. We had the best time. Four years later, he brought me back to Maine, this time to beautiful Bar Harbor. He proposed right on the water at sunset, and it was truly perfect. Afterwards, he surprised me by flying all of our families to Savannah, GA, for a full engagement-party weekend. He could not have planned it more perfectly.

Planning & Style

How would you describe the overall vision or mood you imagined for your wedding weekend?
We got married in the mountains of Vail, Colorado, and wanted the weekend to celebrate the western charm of the area, especially for our rehearsal dinner with a full western-chic vibe. For the wedding day, I wanted the focus to be on the natural beauty around us. We kept the florals minimal and drew our color palette from the elements so the mountains could truly shine.

Tell us about your outfit journey for the weekend - from your wedding dress to your rehearsal night look?
For both looks, I wanted elegance at the core. My rehearsal dress was the Visions Lace in Buttercream. The delicate lace and flawless silk gave the perfect touch of femininity and echoed the western vibe, which I paired with a navy Kemo Sabe cowgirl hat that I customized with lace details. For the wedding, I chose the Johanna dress from Flora. It had the A-line silhouette I had always imagined, with a low back and delicate straps that felt like the perfect version of simple elegance.

What drew you to the Visions Lace Buttercream specifically for the rehearsal?
The Visions Lace dress was the perfect blend of femininity and romance. The lace subtly echoed the western theme of the rehearsal dinner, and paired with my custom lace-detailed cowgirl hat, it created a look that was playful, elegant, and exactly what I had envisioned.

Where was your venue, and what about that setting spoke to you?
We live in Colorado and love the mountains. We spend our summers hiking and winters skiing, so it was an easy decision to get married in a place we love. Many of our friends and family had never experienced the mountains, so we wanted to give them the chance to celebrate with us surrounded by that beauty.

The Big Day

How did it feel stepping into the Visions Lace Dress?
Simply put, The Visions Lace dress made me feel so beautiful. Of course, I was thrilled to wear my wedding gown, but the confidence I felt in the Visions Lace dress was unmatched. Looking back, my favorite photos from the weekend are the ones taken while I was wearing it.

What was the standout moment of your entire wedding day?
Seeing everyone we loved all together in a place we love was the stand out moment. The ceremony felt like love personified and I’ll never be over that special moment becoming husband and wife infront of everyone that means so much to us.

For Future Brides

What's one thing you wish someone had told you before you started planning?
People may say or do things that disappoint or frustrate you, but try not to let it affect you. Focus on enjoying the planning process and give both yourself and your soon-to-be husband grace along the way.

What advice would you give future brides looking for their dresses of the day?
It is easy to get swept up in bold or trendy styles, but you will be looking at these photos forever. I wanted something timeless, a dress I would still love in twenty years. Choose a dress that feels like you and makes you feel beautiful and confident.

One thing you are glad you did not compromise on, and one thing you could have skipped?
I am so glad we did not compromise on our venue. Being surrounded by the mountains was unforgettable. If I could change one thing, I would have chosen a day-of coordinator instead of full-service planning, since I was very hands-on and did not end up using the planner as much as I expected.

Any last words of wisdom for brides planning a day that feels authentically them?
Trust your instincts and do not let others influence your decisions. We stayed true to ourselves, and the result was a weekend that felt completely like us. When you let outside voices take over, the day can start to feel like theirs instead of yours, and this moment should be about you and your partner.

The Last Little Details

Could you share what dresses your bridesmaids wore?
I wanted my bridesmaids to feel comfortable and confident, so I let them choose their own dresses in a butter-yellow tone. They chose styles from Shona Joy, Reformation, and Staud. For my sister and sisters-in-law, who stood with us during the ceremony, I asked them to wear cream satin dresses from Shona Joy to keep everything looking clean and bright.

What was the flavour of the cake?
We actually skipped the traditional cake since we are not big sweet-treat people. Instead, we served a late-night spread of burgers, truffle fries, and assorted grilled cheeses to keep everyone happy after a night of cocktails and dancing.

First dance song?
For our first dance, we chose a slower live cover of Johnny Cash’s “Ring of Fire” performed by The Red Clay Strays. It let us lean into the western feel of the weekend while still keeping the moment romantic. Our band recreated that version just for us, and it felt unique, meaningful, and completely ours.
